FAJARDO, Puerto Rico - Puerto Rico's El Conquistador Resort & Las Casitas Village, Waldorf Astoria Resorts, have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag award for their private 100-acre Palomino Island. Administered by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), the Blue Flag is an exclusive eco-label selectively awarded to beaches based on water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, safety and other services. With high remarks in each area, Palomino Island is one of the select few beaches in Puerto Rico to receive the Blue Flag award.

In addition, the resorts have made numerous green initiatives to become ecologically conscious resorts and leaders in hospitality concerning sustainability projects in Puerto Rico. Highlights of their green initiatives include the use of treated water for their golf course, locally harvested ingredients for their dining outlets, an on-site green house and herb garden, biodegradable products, and more. The resorts' proprietary waste water treatments include resourced treated water for golf course and lawn irrigation, as well as bottle-less water coolers that create clean, fresh drinking water from ambient air. Additional green initiatives at the resorts include recycled rubber used in golf bunkers, room keys made from 43% recycled materials, fuel saving boats and energy star rated TV's in guest rooms and villas.

El Conquistador and Las Casitas have also enacted green initiatives for dining at the resorts, including everything from the food on the plate to the actual plate. Sustainable tea, featuring a biodegradable tea bag, thread and tag, pairs perfectly with the organic, locally harvested honey served at the resorts. An on-site herb garden produces a variety of ingredients that are used in many of the resorts' dishes. Reusable souvenir cups, compostable food and beverage containers, biodegradable bamboo plates, cones, utensils and napkins have also helped to reduce waste production and dishwashing energy.

Promoting wellness inside and out, El Conquistador and Las Casitas offer tours of the nearby nature reserve and El Yunque Rainforest, as well as nature garden walks and ScoutAbout, their educational kids scavenger hunt promoting recycling and exercise. Guests participating in excursions can also elect to receive lunch in a reusable lunch tote with compostable containers. In addition, their award-winning Waldorf Astoria Spa features a unique coffee scrub treatment made using coffee grounds from the on-site Starbucks and oils created by local alchemists, harvested and produced in Puerto Rico.
